Editor of the Informer Newspaper, Andy Kankam has said he is not surprised Ghana has been rated third along with Namibia and Cape Verde on the World Press Freedom Index in Africa for 2021, since press in Ghana has been vibrant and freely.
According to him, he has been a journalist for a while and there is nothing like “Culture of Silence” or attack on the media in Ghana.
He said some journalist write articles and say all sorts of things to tarnish the image of politicians but have not suffered any attack.
“Is it not true that some journalists write article to insult politicians? All the Presidents Ghana have had have suffered the same attacks from journalists that but they don’t send people to go and beat or attack them, No! It does not happen in Ghana. The thing is journalists criticize but don’t want be criticized.”
“So how then do you improve in the profession since you don’t want be criticized?” he quizzed.
Ghana has been rated third on the 2021 World Press Freedom Index in Africa and 2nd in West Africa.
Commenting on this on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, on Link Agoo Am Show, Mr. Kankam said Ghana deserves the ranking but refuted the “Culture of Silence” claim.
He however advised journalist to rather be cautious in their reportage to acquire good name for the profession.
